Trustee

The tasks of a trustee include but are not limited to the following: Support the Unit Management Team (UMT) chair to manage a safe, effective, and successful sea cadet unit. Support the UMT in ensuring all unit activities and matters comply with appropriate regulations and Marine Society and Sea Cadet (MSSC) policies. Support the unit’s fundraising efforts. Ensuring that all young people and instructors at the unit are engaged in fun and safe activities.

About Edinburgh Trinity Sea Cadets

To provide personal development opportunities for young people in a maritime context. About half our juniors and cadets come from EH5 and EH6, many from disadvantaged backgrounds. The unit's name does not refer to the Trinity district. All our instructors and staff are volunteers.

Experience Required

Previous trustee/governance experience would be a benefit, but having the right attitude and a passion for improving the lives of young people are the most important things! Being reliable, trustworthy, enthusiastic, a good communicator, team player and role model are very important.

Training Details

Regardless of which role you have, all Adult Volunteers join us on a probationary basis with an induction, which includes: • Completion of an Adult Application Form • 2 x References (depending on the chosen role) • Disclosure Scotland Check. • 3 x Online Learning Modules; Data Protection, Health & Safety and Safeguarding Awareness. • Online Induction (7x Online Modules) to be completed over 6 months at your own pace. • Online Safeguarding Workshop (this is a virtual course carried out on a weekend evening for approximately 3 hours).

Flexibility & Commitment

Home-Based Volunteering

1-2 hours per week for committee members.

Location/Travel Details

Trustees can carry out their role remotely from home. However, they must attend a regular UMT meeting – usually one hour, monthly or bi-monthly, on a weekday evening at the Sea Cadets Edinburgh Trinity which is located at Claverhouse Training Centre, 8 Granton Square, Edinburgh, EH5 1HA.

Expenses

If UMT members attend a course or weekend event, then their travel and sometimes food expenses, will be reimbursed. Volunteers claim for these through our online App FinanSys.

Are you someone who believes in the power of listening and connection? Join us as a Family Befriender at Home Link Family Support, where your support can make a world of difference to families with young children.	The Supportive Transport Service is a key part of what we offer. It provides transportation to individuals living with or affected by HIV and/or Hepatitis C, helping them meet medical, social care, and daily needs. This might include transport to medical appointments, community activities, or essential errands like grocery shopping. Many Service Users face barriers to traveling independently due to factors such as limited mobility, social anxiety, or financial constraints. In addition to transportation, our drivers often provide a supportive presence by listening or helping individuals reflect on information shared during appointments.	The role of the Activity Buddy is to provide practical support and reduce isolation. The people we work with can find it hard to attend appointments and leisure activities due to poor physical/mental health, limited mobility, social anxiety or literacy issues. When illness, mobility, or side-effects of medication make housework or going out difficult, we offer support to make the home environment more comfortable. Volunteers play a vital part in improving service users’ physical health, mental well-being and quality of life through supportive relationships, community connection, creating pathways for personal growth and collaborative goal setting.	Parents of babies who have received care in hospital from the neonatal team can experience perinatal mental health issues and feelings of isolation.A befriender can provide emotional support to help build positive relationships between parents and their baby and improve parents’ mental health. Accessing activities in the community, going for a walk, or talking over a cuppa are some of the ways in which a Befriender can make a real difference for parents and their babies.	The Open Door Edinburgh provides support to older people, those living with dementia, poor health or mobility and those who care for them.To provide safe transport for vulnerable older people, as part of the day services staff team and drive The Open Door’s vehicle as required.
