festival city volunteers

Volunteers from all over Edinburgh were involved in welcoming and assisting visitors during the Edinburgh Festivals
The Festival City Volunteers programme is a project we delivered from 2017 through to 2019. Please note that this project is not currently running and this page has remained on our site for information only.

What is it?

As part of the 2017 celebrations marking 70 years of Edinburgh as a Festival City, the Festival City Volunteers programme was born, with 40 participants from all over Edinburgh involved in welcoming and assisting visitors during the Edinburgh Festivals. In turn, participants gained training and developed confidence, experience and a range of skills. The project expanded in 2018 and returned for another successful year in 2019.

What did Festival City Volunteers do?

We worked together to greet visitors to Edinburgh and to give people the benefit of our local knowledge. In our first year we greeted and assisted 8845 visitors.

Who we are

Volunteers were aged from 18 upwards and came from all over the world, although we all lived in Edinburgh. We had different motivations for volunteering; some of us were retired, others were students, and some of us were recovering from illness or wanting to get back into work. What we shared was our love of Edinburgh, and wanting to get out and meet new people. For some of us, it was our first time at the Edinburgh Festivals.
