Volunteer Gardener (Astley Ainslie Hospital)

Tasks would include: weeding, trimming, pruning, and clearing out of dead plants; preparing soil for plantings; maintaining garden equipment and storage areas; and taking part in group gardening activities as arranged. Volunteer Gardeners will be managed by a Voluntary Services Manager, but also take directions from a Garden Designer and the Arts & Greenspace Manager from the NHS Lothian Charity.

Experience Required

You do not need to be an expert gardener, but some basic garden care experience would be an advantage. You need to be reliable, punctual, committed, and able to work as a team.

Training Details

Induction training will be provided by the Voluntary Services Manager covering the key aspects of volunteering in a hospital. Specific training related to gardening will be provided by the NHS Lothian Charity.

Flexibility & Commitment


2 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months, but we would love you to stay longer. We have volunteers at NHS Lothian who have been volunteering for decades and are still making a difference.

Location/Travel Details

Astley Ainslie Hospital, 33 Grange Loan, Edinburgh EH9 2HL. Lothian Buses has several services which stop close to the hospital. Free onsite parking is also available.


Agreed out of pocket expenses which are incurred when carrying out this volunteer role (e.g., travel) will be reimbursed in line with the NHS Lothian volunteer expenses policy and signed off by the Voluntary Services Manager.
