Volunteer Crew Member – Re-Union Canal Boat Project

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who would like to support the work of our canal boat the Lochrin Belle based at Edinburgh Quay
Main tasks include:

Crewing the boat.
Being a public face of the organisation.
Welcoming people aboard.
Dealing with the needs of passengers.
Supporting the health and safety of passengers.
Helping with maintenance and cleaning.
Supporting colleagues including the skipper and other volunteer crew members.

About Fountainbridge Canalside Community Trust (FCCT)

Fountainbridge Canalside Community Trust (FCCT) supports and encourages communities to engage positively with the canal, to promote its heritage, environment and amenity, with a view to encouraging more local people to use the canal to their benefit. We have been operating since 2004 working with canal-side communities near the Union Canal.

Training Details

All volunteers are offered taster sessions and if they decide to proceed we then enable them to 'shadow' experienced crew and attend our regular Tuesday morning volunteer sessions which include training. We offer 1-1 supervision support for volunteers but this is not compulsory. We hope that volunteers will want to get more involved with crewing on our boat and we aspire to offer all volunteer crew the opportunity to take a Helmsman training course which takes place in Falkirk.

Location/Travel Details

Fountainbridge Canalside Community Trust, c/o Scottish Canals Office, 23 Lower Gilmore Place, Edinburgh EH3 9NY We are located on Edinburgh Quay - our boat travels out from here along the canal so the office address is very much the starting point. There are numerous bus routes stopping nearby and we encourage active travel to and from our location.

Expenses

We can provide an expenses claim form and assist with its completion - expenses can be paid from petty cash or if it's a greater amount by bank transfer.

Are you someone who believes in the power of listening and connection? Join us as a Family Befriender at Home Link Family Support, where your support can make a world of difference to families with young children.	Our volunteer mentors are matched with young people who have completed either our Choices or Chances programmes with a positive destination. Main activities will include meeting with your mentee regularly for up to 12 months. Developing an action plan to help them sustain their positive destination. Support your mentee in figuring out what goals they want to work on next. Offer support and advice to your mentee as they navigate the next chapter of young adulthood.	The Supportive Transport Service is a key part of what we offer. It provides transportation to individuals living with or affected by HIV and/or Hepatitis C, helping them meet medical, social care, and daily needs. This might include transport to medical appointments, community activities, or essential errands like grocery shopping. Many Service Users face barriers to traveling independently due to factors such as limited mobility, social anxiety, or financial constraints. In addition to transportation, our drivers often provide a supportive presence by listening or helping individuals reflect on information shared during appointments.	The role of the Activity Buddy is to provide practical support and reduce isolation. The people we work with can find it hard to attend appointments and leisure activities due to poor physical/mental health, limited mobility, social anxiety or literacy issues. When illness, mobility, or side-effects of medication make housework or going out difficult, we offer support to make the home environment more comfortable. Volunteers play a vital part in improving service users’ physical health, mental well-being and quality of life through supportive relationships, community connection, creating pathways for personal growth and collaborative goal setting.	Parents of babies who have received care in hospital from the neonatal team can experience perinatal mental health issues and feelings of isolation.A befriender can provide emotional support to help build positive relationships between parents and their baby and improve parents’ mental health. Accessing activities in the community, going for a walk, or talking over a cuppa are some of the ways in which a Befriender can make a real difference for parents and their babies.
