Support Session Volunteer – Unpaid Carers

Could you help us support unpaid carers in Edinburgh? Could you help someone find local services? Could you help someone understand the information they have been given about their care and support? Could you support or lead a group of people on a topic of interest? You could help support carers who, while caring for others, need help too. This role is ideal for social work students, anyone with an interest in the care sector or retired professionals.

We’ve been supporting people to be heard in decisions about their health, care and wellbeing for over 40 years. We’re an independent charity and one of the UK’s largest providers of advocacy and involvement services.

Experience Required

Essential: Good listening and communication skills. Ability to travel across the city. Interest in supporting others. Basic IT skills. Desirable: Experience of carers issues. Experience in volunteering. Local knowledge. Willingness to learn new skills.

Training Details

Our training is delivered online with a combination of Instructor-led sessions and e-learning. Volunteers also go out with a staff member and do some shadowing before they start. We encourage our volunteers to increase their knowledge and develop their skills and offer additional training opportunities.

Flexibility & Commitment

Home-Based Volunteering;Flexible;Ad hoc

3 hrs. per week for min. 6 months.

Location/Travel Details

Parts of the role will be home-based. Promotional and group activities may be throughout Edinburgh at community centres and other locations.


An Excel spreadsheet is filled in and sent to the Volunteer Team, along with pictures of any receipts. The expenses approved are paid by BACS into the volunteers bank account.
