Classroom Assistant

Main purpose:
To provide tutor support during classes within our Community College based at 156 Cowgate. We regularly recruit volunteer assistants to support our IT and Numeracy classes.

Duties and responsibilities:
Provide support to students and teaching staff in the classroom.
Deal with student enquiries regarding class work.
Support students in developing their learning skills.
Photocopying of training materials when required.
Where appropriate support teaching staff in designing class activities.
Any other tasks as they arise and are agreed.

About Access to Industry

Access to Industry helps individuals to take steps towards employment by developing and delivering work focused education and training through partnership with key education and training providers. This includes a range of specialist services such as case-work, accredited training, college courses, job skills training and advocacy. Access to Industry is a voluntary organisation.

Experience Required

An enjoyment of teaching people who might not possess previous knowledge on the subject they are studying. Good communication skills. A clear, respectful and friendly manner. Reliability and good timekeeping. Empathy and enthusiasm for helping others. Good MS Office skills are required of our IT Classroom Assistants.

Training Details

Volunteers can expect an interview to find out more about the role. If the role is taken up, following recruitment interview, there will be an induction into role and the organisation. The first two-weeks of active engagement in the role will be used by both the volunteer and by Access to Industry to ascertain appropriateness of the role for each party. Each volunteer will have the support of a named mentor who will work with them and meet with them regularly to ensure that the role continues to develop and to answer any questions arising. They will be able to access training that is normally available to Access to Industry staff.

Short Term Volunteering (3 months or less);Term Time

Minimum 2.25 hours per week for 2 months

Location/Travel Details

Access to Industry Cowgate Community College, 156 Cowgate. Multiple public transport links - walking distance from South Bridge and the National Museum, as well as the Waverley train station. Volunteers on the Lothian Bus route can claim travel expenses. These will be issued as Day Savers.
