Carer Relief Companion

Carer Relief Companions provide companionship to person with support needs, to give their unpaid carer a break from their role while giving them peace of mind that the person they care for is safe and has company in their home environment. The person who has support needs benefits from a new social connection and engaging in activities such as reminiscence, enjoying a hobby together, chatting, or watching tv.

About NHS Lothian Primary Care Organisation

NHS Lothian Substance Misuse Directorate: The Substance Misuse Directorate provides treatment and support for adults who have drug and/or alcohol problems. There are a variety of services which provide variety of care ranging from Harm Reduction, detoxification treatment and rehabilitation. The bases are at Spittal Street Centre, Royal Edinburgh Hospital and Astley Ainslie Hospital.

Experience Required

Good listener and verbal communicator Responsible, patient and non-judgmental Punctual and reliable Warm, friendly and professional approach Respect for confidentiality Desirable: experience of supporting someone with a health condition or disability eg. dementia, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons

Training Details

Training takes place in small group interactive sessions online. Volunteer then have a bespoke induction at an introductory meeting with the family, specific to the client's support needs.

Flexibility & Commitment

Term Time

2-4 hours per week for 6 months

Location/Travel Details

The volunteer will be matched with a family who they will visit at home. Families are located across Midlothian.


Expenses are reimbursed by completing an expense claim form and (where applicable) presenting receipts or travel tickets. Reimbursement is made by bank transfer.
