Human contact is vital. As we are all finding out, without it, life changes.
Community Alcohol Related Damages Service is a befriending service run by Rowan Alba. Health care specialists, GP’s, hospitals and mental health services refer individuals to our service. These people, for various reasons have been living the way we are experiencing now, for many years. Some of them for most of their lives. We need to recruit and train volunteers now so we can respond when restrictions are lifted,
About Rowan Alba
Rowan Alba Limited is a charity set up to work with people who are at risk of becoming homeless. We believe that all individuals have the right to be treated with dignity and respect, and offer support in a person centred way, with the individual actively involved in planning their care. We work with older homeless men and women in our supported accommodation and individuals in the community who are having difficulty sustaining their current accommodation. Many of our service users would benefit from more social contact and just having someone to talk to could make a big difference to them.
To understand or have compassion towards those individuals who have had a difficult relationship with alcohol now or in the past. Ideally you will have had experience in a role where managing relationships is key. Being able to listen without judgement and understand the benefit of human contact.
We will provide induction training via an induction pack, discussion over the telephone or zoom and induction videos and group zoom sessions. We will explain all there is we know about the person you will be meeting and the idea is to set up phone calls once the recruitment procedure is in place so that when the social distancing is lifted we can respond immediately with a fully trained volunteer. We will offer one to one support and supervision with a mentor and group supervision sessions. We will do the matching process by telling the individual a little about you and aid the conversation by introducing you first and preparing you both for the process. You will have full access to the SVQ and coaching qualifications offered by Rowan Alba training sessions and access to our clinical psychology reflection sessions.
Flexibility & Commitment
This role has arisen due to the CoVid 19 and the communities concern about vulnerable adults. Once the volunteer has passed the recruitment stage and is confident to progress the role can be carried out in the volunteers home and they must have access to internet and a computer for typing notes of the conversation. The volunteer will then go on to work in the persons home or meet in a café to fulfil the weekly hour sessions. Our head office is in Edinburgh City Centre however all of our staff are working from home so interview and induction will take place via telephone, zoom and email.
Email or hand in an expenses form and paid on the 20th of each month. Arrangements can be made to support with advance payments if this is helpful or would otherwise prevent you from volunteering.
- Happy to have a conversation about volunteer’s needs
