Befriender for the over 60s who live in EH10 or EH13 and are at risk of suffering from loneliness and isolation. Volunteers are matched with an older person to provide company and to engage in social activities or accompany someone to a group.

About Oxgangs Befriending Service

We are a charity who support older people who live in EH10 or EH13 and are at risk of loneliness and isolation. Our main aims are to help reduce loneliness by providing company and friendly social engagement to older people. We want to encourage them to get linked into their community more and help them become more independent.

Experience Required

Ideally, befrienders should be friendly, able to make conversation, be open minded and non-judgemental. Must be reliable and able to commit for at least 3 months.

Training Details

We provide full induction training prior to being matched. Throughout the role there will be other training opportunities eg Dementia Awareness which are optional to attend.

Flexibility & Commitment


1-2 hours per week or fortnight

Location/Travel Details

Our clients usually stay in EH10 or EH13 postcodes.


We have a volunteer expense form to be completed and submitted monthly and expenses are paid directly into your bank account.
