All Aboard Crew

As an All Aboard crew volunteer, the main tasks include: acting as crew for a minimum of one weekly 3 hour cruise; ensuring health and safety of all on board; supporting the helmsman and crew to meet the requirements of each trip; opening up and closing down the boat following all procedures with crew and knowing what to do in the event of an emergency.

About People Know How (Edinburgh)

People Know How is a Scottish charity working with people and communities to develop innovative strategies and services to address social issues. Our aim is to support and empower both individuals and organisations to mobilise their assets and realise their true potential.

Experience Required

We are looking for the following skills/qualities - • Experience on a canal boat would be advantageous, but not essential. • Good communication and teamwork. • To be able to calmly carry out emergency procedures, if ever needed. • Happy to be outside in all weathers. • Friendly, positive attitude.

Training Details

As part of People Know How, you will receive: • Guidance on using our systems including Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams. • Full induction training to familiarise yourself with the charity and volunteer procedures. • Role-specific training where the role and any safeguarding and emergency procedures will be explained as well as the other procedures in place on the boat. • Regular on-going guidance and support.

Flexibility & Commitment


The minimum time commitment we are looking for is 3 hours per week for 3 months.

Location/Travel Details

The All Aboard canal boat is based at Polwarth Parish Church pontoon. There is parking, and bus links next to the church.


Volunteers can claim back travel expenses every month through our expenses form.
