Activity Volunteer

Portobello Monday Centre is a small lunch/social club which meets every Monday and gives dementia-sufferers (members) the chance to enjoy a meal and socialise with others. Volunteers help to set up the hall and serve morning tea/coffee with home baking, followed later by lunch. They assist in the running of various activities, such as, singing, quizzes, quoits and Kurling, and also help on the bus that brings members to the Centre and takes them home again at the end of the session.

About Portobello Monday Centre

To provide informal day care once a week for up to a maximum of 12 'members' who suffer from dementia and are resident in the Portobello area, giving them the chance to enjoy a meal and socialise with others, whilst at the same time allowing some valued respite for their carers.

Training Details

New volunteers are given a pack of essential information and policies on starting employment. The Policy on training requires allocation of a Named Support Person (experienced volunteer) to each new volunteer. The Named Person is responsible for carrying out Induction Training and the Volunteer Induction Checklist must be completed within one month of a volunteer joining the Centre. In-house, task-based training is carried out at a time judged appropriate for each volunteer by a volunteer experienced in that task. The training carried out will be recorded on the Volunteer Training Record and must be signed and dated by both the trainee and the trainer. Group training sessions which may require an external speaker may also be recorded on the same form. Volunteers may also request funding to attend an external training session subject to approval by senior managers.
