As recent reports have demonstrated, volunteers and volunteering are changing. Volunteers have been involved in hospices since Cicely Saunders opened the first modern hospice in 1967 – and in other hospices prior to that. But hospices have tended to offer traditional roles – regular, set hours, task-based. St Columba’s Hospice has been experimenting with new ways of involving volunteers, and in 2017 it won a national volunteering award for its work. Karen will speak about the changes they have made, and what they have learned.
Karen Filsell has been Volunteer Services Manager at St Columba’s Hospice since 2014. She was inspired by the work of volunteers when she spent 8 years working in cathedral administration – alongside 1000 volunteers. From 2005 to 2008 she ran St Albans Volunteer Centre, and has since run volunteering programmes at the Hospice of St Francis and Children’s Hospices across Scotland, before moving to St Columba’s Hospice.
