Building Diversity into Volunteering

Each unit consists of two hours of online coursework to be completed anytime Monday to Thursday, with a 1.5 hour group Zoom discussion at the end of the week (range of slots available)

Week 1 – Diversity, Inclusion and your organisation
Building a more diverse and inclusive volunteering programme has many benefits for your organization and your community. This course will focus on the value that diversity can bring to your organization, what the barriers and challenges there may in your organisation and how to overcome them, and start to reflect on your current volunteering programme.
Week 2 – Designing an inclusive volunteer programme
In the second part of the course we will continue to reflect on current volunteer practice within your organization before moving on to look at how you can design a more inclusive volunteering structure and learn some useful practical steps which you can implement.
Topics that will be covered include:
- What is meant by equality and diversity;
- What increased diversity can add to your volunteer programme;
- Equality monitoring;
- Designing a more inclusive volunteering programme;
- Practical tips to make your organisation more welcoming.
The course is delivered over two weeks on the Volunteer Edinburgh Academy and Zoom.

Each week will require approximately 3.5 hours of study time, most of which can be done flexibly to suit you, but you are required to attend a weekly Zoom session on Friday. You can participate in the course at any time between Monday and Friday.
The course consists of several activities including self-study (reading) and forum discussions all of which can be done at your own pace on the Academy. There is also a weekly 1.5 hour, facilitated Zoom session each Friday to enable you to connect with other learners, reflect on your practice and learning, and share discussions. You will be able to select a time slot for the Zoom session that suits you best; we will have a maximum of six participants in each slot.
