About Volunteer Edinburgh - Community Connecting
Community Connecting is an innovative service that works across Edinburgh. We help isolated older people get involved with activities in their local communities, and take up hobbies both old and new. It has an immensely positive impact on their quality of life.
Volunteer Edinburgh is working in partnership with Places for People Scotland Care & Support to recruit and support volunteers to help older people who have become lonely and isolated. Community Connecting supports older people to find out what is going on in their local area and, through matching them with a volunteer for up to 16 weeks, helps to build their confidence to access community resources, try new things, or take up old interests once again. You will be matched with an older person in your community, build a good relationship with them and understand their goals and support them to work towards achieving their goals, e.g. by helping someone rebuild their confidence to go on a bus, or attending activities together until the person feels comfortable doing it themselves.
Skills & Experience
Volunteers will come from a wide range of backgrounds and will have many different qualities and skills. Essential qualities for this role are: excellent communication skills, a real interest in helping older people, patience, reliability and a sense of humour. All volunteers will be required to provide 2 references and have PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) Scheme membership, which we will help you to obtain free of charge.
Volunteering takes place at service users’ home address and within local communities throughout Edinburgh. You will also need to attend training and support sessions at the Volunteer Edinburgh offices at 222 Leith Walk.
